Ink-ed? Crucial Things to Note If Getting A Tattoo http://www2.emmagem.com/2012/05/16/ink-ed-crucial-things-to-note-if-getting-a-tattoo/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ink-ed-crucial-things-to-note-if-getting-a-tattoo http://www2.emmagem.com/2012/05/16/ink-ed-crucial-things-to-note-if-getting-a-tattoo/#comments Wed, 16 May 2012 01:00:00 +0000 elise http://www2.emmagem.com/?p=37767

Thinking of getting yourself a tattoo?

Where once it use to be a thing of rarity, tattoos have now become a part of fashion, and just about everyone has a tattoo. Even teenagers are getting inked these days.

But before you rush off and get yourself a tatt just because you think it’s “cool” or because “all your friend’s have one”, consider the following and think about what you want to do.

Think before you ink. After all a tattoo is for life.

  • Why Are You Doing It? Because you really want to? Is it something you’ve always wanted? Does the design you want hold a special meaning for you? Or are you just doing it because all your friend’s have one?

  • Are You Ready To Live With It For The Rest Of Your Life? Your tattoo is going to be there forever. And the tattoo you thought was so cute and funny at 21 may not be as funny when you’re 61.

  • Do You Know The Risks Involve? These include possible skin infection, tattoo’s gone wrong if the artist is inexperienced, allergic reactions and soreness among other things. Are you ready to possibly deal with those?

  • Do You Have A Design In Mind? Going to the tattoo parlor on a whim and picking a random design that looks cool at that moment might not be the best decision. People change their minds all the time and you might not be as fond of your choice a few years down the road. Does the design have significant meaning  to you?

  • Have You Done Your Research? What kind of design you want, what the cost is going to be, where to get it done, how experienced the artist is, do you know anyone who can recommend a good artist are just some of the many things to find out before you ink yourself. Find out if you like his design philosophy. Does he or she have a good rep. Last thing you want is an infection through unclean needles from hepatitis or worse HIV or an unhappy experience under the needle.

Think seriously before you ink! Your patience will pay off when you have a design you’re fully satisfied with.

Makeup Lovers, get ready to fall in love with The Balm! http://www2.emmagem.com/2012/05/14/makeup-lovers-get-ready-to-fall-in-love-with-the-balm/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=makeup-lovers-get-ready-to-fall-in-love-with-the-balm http://www2.emmagem.com/2012/05/14/makeup-lovers-get-ready-to-fall-in-love-with-the-balm/#comments Mon, 14 May 2012 02:35:55 +0000 liyana http://www2.emmagem.com/?p=37919

Early last year, I strolled into Sasa just to window shop. What I didn’t expect was to discover a brand that went on to become my most favourite makeup brand: The Balm.

What makes The Balm more amazing is the story of how it was birthed. The brain behind the brand is Marissa Shipman, who had always dreamed of working for a cosmetics company ever since she was a little girl who loved playing around with makeup. With no experience though, she was rejected from every cosmetic company she applied to.

But that did not dampen her spirits whatsoever. “I came to the conclusion that if no one was going to hire me in cosmetics, I was going to start my own company,” Marissa said. “Everyone thought I was crazy.”

Armed with 11 books on cosmetics she ordered from Amazon.com, she began mixing and experimenting in her own kitchen sink, starting with the easiest recipe she could find: lip balm.

Marissa managed to secure a meeting with Sephora at their headquarters in San Francisco. Arriving with her pug Wheezie and her only product then, Plump Your Pucker, she aced the meeting and scored distribution in five Sephora stores. Now, impressively sold in 46 countries, The Balm has branched out into eyeshadows, blush, lipsticks, cleansers, moisturizers and a lot more.

For the relatively affordable price, it is surprising to see how incredibly pigmented and intense their eyeshadows are. Plus they have such catchy names, some of which I’m sure were named after those working for the brand: Mischievous Marissa (after the founder and CEO), Jealous Jordana (Jordana Shipman, Executive Vice President), Caught In The Act Courtney (Courtney Cecil, Vice President of Marketing) and Envious Erin (Erin Hummel, Operations Manager) to name a few. Their core eyeshadows are sold separately and also in three palettes, Shady Lady Vol. 1 to 3, sold at RM 120 each. Unfortunately, only the third volume is available locally now, but you can always opt to get the rest on their official website!

Shady Lady Vol. 2 and 3 palettes offer fun and bright colours

Two of their latest palettes are definitely unique: Nude ‘Tude, which are full of beautiful, versatile nude hues (RM 115) and Meet Matt(e), a palette consisting of wearable matte colours that simply caters to the market’s need for non-shimmery and non-glittery colours for a day at work (RM 99).

The Balm created two versions of packaging for this palette: a “naughty” one and a “nice” one. Guess which one this is?

Are you getting bored with shimmers and glitters? Then go Meet Matt(e)!

Other The Balm products to look out for? Many people simply love their Time Balm concealers (RM 55 each) and their fun themed blushers, Down Boy, Cabana Boy and Frat Boy. Another fans favourite – mine as well! – is their Bahama Mama bronzer (RM 65), which is matte and perfect for all skin colours, as it’s buildable.

There are 6 shades to choose from the Time Balm concealer collection

You can get Down Boy, a gorgeous soft, baby pink hue that is perfect for everyday looks, for RM 65

Besides their top-notch quality, what makes The Balm so appealing is their packaging. Cute, quirky and unique are what sets The Balm apart from the other brands.

For all you Sephora aficionados out there, it is quite unfortunate that our two Sephora branches here don’t carry the brand, but not to worry; The Balm is stock in the Sasa store nationwide! Go check them out and be ready to fall in love.

Already a lover of The Balm like I am? Share with us what YOUR favourite The Balm product is!

5 Ground-breaking Videos You Must See! http://www2.emmagem.com/2012/05/14/5-ground-breaking-videos-you-must-see/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=5-ground-breaking-videos-you-must-see http://www2.emmagem.com/2012/05/14/5-ground-breaking-videos-you-must-see/#comments Sun, 13 May 2012 21:13:02 +0000 hannef http://www2.emmagem.com/?p=37972

We are all about visuals. We love to see beautiful things and our first impression on people are most of the time based on how they look. It’s very shallow but we still judge the book by its cover anyway. Guilty as charged!

We apply the same kind of philosophy on music too. Well maybe not all of us but admit it, some us do. How many times have you listened to a song on the radio and thought nothing of it until you saw the music video? Beyonce’s Run The World. Gosh! It’s an awful song but as soon as we saw the video, we started to ‘learn’ to like it and listen to it more just so that it will eventually grow on us. What not to love about the sexy accompanying video to the song? Beyonce is gorgeous in it, there’s a lion, soldiers and more outfit change than any Bollywood musical out there.

So music video is a contributing factor to the popularity of a certain songs. Bad song but good video, people will be listening anyway. Add in some elements of sex, A-listers cameo, pop culture references and controversy to the video. The single will definitely be a big hit. Well at least people will be requesting on MTV.

Let’s have a look at our pick of five most visually captivating and ground-breaking music videos we’ve seen so far.

1. Criminal- Fiona Apple
Fiona Apple is one very talented singer but this video really cemented her status as one of the most interesting acts to come out of the late nineties. The video directed by Mak Romanek features Apple surrounded by intoxicated looking models as she undress and sang about being “a bad bad girl”. The video was released around the same time Kate Moss made ‘heroine-chic’ cool (thanks to her black and white Calvin Klein ads). Apple was scrutinized for her severely skinny frame in the video.

2. Like A Prayer- Madonna
The Catholic symbols like stigmata and burning crosses in the video were highly condemned by the Catholic groups at that time. Madonna’s contract with Pepsi was subsequently cancelled and she was banned from performing in Italy.

3. Thunder Rolls- Garth Brook
Who would have thought that a country video could be this controversial. The graphic display of domestic violence and murder at the end of the video caused the video to be banned from airing on Country Music Television.

*This video contains nudity

4. Window Seat- Erykah Badu
Too bad her concert in Kuala Lumpur didn’t actually happen. Badu is no stranger to controversy. This one-take video for Window Seat shows her walking along the Elm Street in Dallas which leads her to the spot where President John F.Kennedy was assassinated. She falls down completely naked as if she has just got shot. Badu was fined 500 dollars for filming without permit and disorderly conduct by the state of Dallas.

5. Bad Romance- Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga’s video for Bad Romance has just the right amount of quirkiness and high-fashion in it. Her works post-Bad Romance seem too crazy, over-the-top and unoriginal. Wearing straight of the runway pieces from Alexander McQueen’s “Plato’s Atlantis” collection, Gaga dances and displays raw emotions throughout the video. Come on! Who could forget those Armadillo heels and the sparkling fire bra?

With all these strong visual impacts, are we even listening to the song?

Two men share an odd friendship while they care for their girlfriends who are both in deep comas.

Benigno (Javier Camára) is a male nurse whose apartment overlooks a dance studio run by Katerina (Geraldine Chaplin); he often sits on his balcony and watches one of Katerina’s students, Alicia (Leonor Watling), and he finds himself becoming infatuated with her. When Alicia is severely injured in an auto accident that leaves her in a coma, Benigno discovers she has been admitted to the hospital where he works, and he spends his days caring for a woman he now deeply loves but has barely met. Marco (Darío Grandinetti) is a journalist who was assigned to interview Lydia (Rosario Flores), a well-known female bullfighter whose on-the-rocks romance with another toreador, “El Niño de Valencia” (Adolfo Fernández), has made her the focus of the tabloid press. During Marco’s interview with Lydia, he goes out of his way to treat her kindly, and she appears to return his attention. During the bullfight which follows, Lydia is gored by the bull, and is now in a coma; Marco is certain his interview broke her steely concentration, and he spends most of his days at the hospital, convinced her injuries are his fault. Alicia and Lydia are both housed in the same ward of the same hospital, and in time Benigno and Marco become close friends, bonding in their shared devotion to women who cannot return their affection. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Is Funnyman Russell Peters a Racist?- video http://www2.emmagem.com/2012/05/12/is-funnyman-russell-peters-a-racist-video/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=is-funnyman-russell-peters-a-racist-video http://www2.emmagem.com/2012/05/12/is-funnyman-russell-peters-a-racist-video/#comments Sat, 12 May 2012 02:03:14 +0000 yetmee http://www2.emmagem.com/?p=37862

Sellout shows from London to Dubai and now in Kuala Lumpur, the question arises, is Russell Peters a racist? Currently on his worldwide Notorious Tour in Jakarta and tomorrow night in Kuala Lumpur finally, this man has had millions in stitches and a true success story from “viral” effect. After ten long hard years as a stand up in Canada,  in 1989, Peters’ moment of truth came about when a fan posted a recording of his comedy show on  the worldwide wide web of videos, the YOUTUBE. Peters claim never to have uploaded anything on Youtube himself as he considers himself totally unsavvy online, became a household name of comedy and has seen him performing life from Canada to South Africa and this Saturday at Stadium Melawati Kuala Lumpur.

Peters fans knows and likes him for his loud, irreverent  humour on cultural diversity from Indian accents  right down to Chinese idiosyncrasies… with jokes like “Indians cannot live without a bargain and Chinese people cannot give you a bargain..” ; this comedian of Indian origin who was born in Canada but resides in USA, would know all about cultural diversity.

Millions of fans and millions of dollars later, he still has them in stitches and in his pocket. The Kuala Lumpur show was extended from 1 day to 2 days and both days sold out within minutes… amazing and yet as a friend pointed out, aren’t his jokes just a tad racist. But then I guess the best jokes in town always are a little self deprecating and more  than a little poke fun nature at others eccentricities and weaknesses- racial themed ones usually works best; perhaps just a tad vulgar  such that everyone can laugh as a way to show how cool they are and maybe not just a little of angst being released in the meantime. Nonetheless, he is funny and millions thinks so, and so do we. But in case you missed out on the RM338 tickets which are already sold out, enjoy the attached video and let us know if you are joining the fan club.
