T he ‘relaxed’ or ‘weekend’ look is hard to get right. The key is to LOOK effortlessly put together, as if you just grabbed whatever you had and pulled it on in less than 5 minutes. Truth is, it requires a certain amount of well thought-out coordination, and the fit has to be impeccable. Which means: sweatpants, socks that don’t match your shoes, baggy shorts and that ill-fitting T-shirt – these don’t work! Heck, even your shades can make or break your overall look.
Fret not, though – we’ve got tips on how you can pull off a relaxed weekend look, without looking like you dressed yourself in the dark:
1) Pair a loose shirt with fitted or tapered pants
Oversized chambray shirts or denim workshirts look great when paired with slim-fit pants that hug your curves in all the right places (though do avoid super-skinny jeans that cut off blood circulation). Practice the same rule for boyfriend blazers, too. You don’t want to look like you’re drowning in your clothes.
2) Wear something vintage with something modern
Even though vintage is cool, you also need to tone it down a notch and make it more modern. Is your dress too loose? Belt it up with a bright skinny belt! Wear a vintage denim jacket with a jersey maxi dress – it’s comfy without being too revealing.
Esprit’s SS13 collection practically screams ‘lived-in chic’, with printed cigarette pants, laidback blazers, and travel-friendly accessories. The collection will be available from February 2013 onwards at all Esprit stores nationwide.
3) Choose well-fitting sportswear with unexpected details
Keep your pieces well-fitted (no baggy sweatpants or faded sports bras, please!), and look out for attention to detail and finishes, like a swimsuit with a floral print (which doubles as a top for a day at the beach), or a metallic zip-up jacket (which looks as good with a flirty black skater dress as it looks with running shorts).

4) Flip-flops in vibrant shades go well with everything!
Bright, happy flip-flops go well with just about anything in your closet, and are pretty durable too. The latest trend to reach Malaysian shores is collapsible flip-flops, which folds up into a fraction of its original size, so you can chuck them into your bag and exchange them with your heels whenever necessary.
Flipsters Flip Flops, RM99, are available at Flight 001 (Bangsar Village 2 and e@Curve).
5) Go for transparent retro-inspired sunnies…
Shades make up the finishing touches of your laid-back luxe look. Channel a 70s-inspired look with transparent sunnies in candy colours like green, pink, lime and sapphire. These look great with an oversized white tee, paired with grungy faded denims.

6) …If not, you can never go wrong with tortoiseshell
If you’re into something safer and more versatile, tortoiseshell is a great option because they will never go out of style. Wayfarers strike an impeccable balance between relaxed and trendy, and they’re cool in a not-so-flashy way, just like you.
