F orget complicated tutorials which are so confusing that we don’t even understand what they mean – our version of ombre nails is seriously so easy; you’ll be done in a jiffy. What about skills? This doesn’t require any. All you need is a bit of free time!
Here’s what we used:
(1) Etude House Shimmery Top Coat (part of a set)
(2) Mary Kay Base Coat/Top Coat
(3) Anna Sui Nail Color N in 208, RM54
(4) RMK Nail Color in P21 Deep Purple Rose, RM65
(5) Angled makeup sponge, RM5 for 13pcs, Daiso
Before you start:
Remove your old nail polish thoroughly. Here’s how the professionals do it: instead of using one whole cotton pad, cut it into quarters. This saves cotton, and also removes nail polish super-easily!
Saturate the mini-squares in varnish remover and place them on your nails like so. Leave on for a few seconds, and simply slide them off. Your nail polish comes right off.
Step 1: Prep
Always prep your nails with base coat. Many of us skip this step, but did you know that base coat protects your nails from yellowing? Nail colours, especially the darker colours, contain lots of pigments that can seep into your nails and stay there.
Step 2: Base colour
Choose a light, translucent lilac as the base colour. Ombre works better on a light-coloured base. If you choose a dark base and light tips, it won’t be that obvious. Paint on two coats.
Step 3: Sponge-on the ombre
Use the brush to paint a strip of colour along the sponge as shown. Dab it onto the tips of your nails. Repeat the process if you want a darker ombre. We ‘sponged’ our nails twice to achieve this intensity. What’s great is that you don’t have to be precise about doing this.
This is what it will look like. Don’t mind the mistakes – the best thing about this DIY manicure is that nobody can tell right from wrong (because there is no right and wrong!)
Step 4: Finish it off!
We applied shimmer top coat for a bit of sparkle. You can also use a clear top coat.
And that’s it – you’re done! We weren’t kidding when we said 10 minutes.
Watch our video tutorial to see how it’s done!
Happy weekend, girls!
