N ew York Fashion Week (NYFW) showcased Spring 2013 collections from top designers from 6th to 13th September, but we still can’t get enough of how pretty the hairstyles were! We’ve reinterpreted three of our favourites into more wearable styles which take mere minutes to recreate. And we’re telling you from personal experience – we’ve tried them, and these hairstyles really work! Whether you’re a beginner or well-versed in styling your tresses, these fail-proof looks go well with any outfit in your closet.
Look #1 – Extreme Side Parting
Beginners: Clean & Slick inspired by Michael Kors
Wear it like a pro!
- This looks best on day-old hair (so you can skip the shampoo!).
- Use a fine-toothed comb to create a stark parting on the side, keeping the line straight.
- For a hint of shine as shown on the model above, smooth a bit of gel over the surface of your hair (you can steal your brother’s or boyfriend’s for this).
- Gather the rest of the hair into a low ponytail at the base of the neck.
Advanced: Edgy Coif inspired by Marc Jacobs
Wear it like a pro!
- After shampooing, part your hair on the opposite side of your usual parting. This gives your hair that boost of volume. Secure with a clip and allow to dry.
- If your hair is fine, massage volumizing powder (try Redken Powder Grip or L’Oreal Professionnel Super Dust) along the parting.
- Keep your fringe from falling into your eyes with a bit of matte hair wax, and twist the rest of the hair into a messy bun.
Look #2 – Braids
Beginners: Grecian Style inspired by Herve Leger
Wear it like a pro!
- Straighten your hair with a flat iron after prepping it with two pumps of heat-protecting serum to prevent split ends.
- Take a 1-inch thick section from the side and start braiding it from the roots until the ends. Secure with an elastic band.
- Tuck the braid underneath your hair on the other side, and leave the rest of the hair loose.
- Warm a pea-sized drop of shine serum in your palms and smooth along the hair’s surface for mirror-like gloss.
Advanced: Double Fishtail inspired by Tory Burch
Wear it like a pro!
- Part your hair down the middle, and remove any tangles with a brush to make the braiding process easier.
- Start a fishtail braid from the nape of your neck, all the way to the ends.
- Tie the ends with an elastic band and use your fingertips to loosen the braid, so you get a ‘fat’, loose one instead of a ‘skinny’, tight one.
- The messier the better, so don’t overthink it when you’re braiding!
Look #3 – Rainbow highlights
Beginners: Pastel Mania inspired by Peter Som
Wear it like a pro!
- Prep your hair before going to bed by parting your hair down the middle, and twisting each side to form a bun. Go to bed with the buns in your hair.
- In the morning, unravel the buns to achieve the slept-in look.
- Instead of dip-dyeing, we recommend clip-in extensions (which can be bought from Sinma or wig shops from Sungei Wang for around RM10 per section).
- Clip the extensions onto your roots, at the bottom part of the scalp so that they blend naturally with your own hair.
- Finger-comb and you’re good to go!
Advanced: Neon Updo inspired by Oscar de la Renta
Wear it like a pro!
- Using the same type of clip-on extensions, clip them onto your roots, this time around the top of your scalp. Remember to leave a 2-inch circumference all around so that they blend into your hair easily.
- Sweep all your hair up into a bun (or high ponytail, for a less mature look). We think this looks nice if the bun looks messier.
- If you’re worried about the clip-on extensions getting loose, add a spiked hairband for just the right amount of punk-grunge effect.
