This year we have been all about fire-hot red and tangy tangerine lips, but pay attention to another lip colour that has been encasing the many lips of Hollywood trendsetters: dark, dark lips that veer towards black. This trend most probably was inspired by the many movies and TV shows are centered on the myth of vampires; Twilight, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, to name a few, have created frenzy amongst tweens, teens and adults alike.

Dark lips are usually attached to the Goth look, but these A-listers showed us that these dark berry hues are totally wearable and super chic. They’re especially perfect for those who love to sex up their makeup and give off that mysterious and alluring vibe. Learn how to match dark lips to the makeup on the rest of your face from these sexy celebs.

Kate Bosworth

The Queen of “no-makeup” makeup look, Kate Bosworth surprised everyone with her choice of lip colour at the MET Gala this year. Kate opted to match her lips to the top part of her dress, which is a dark burgundy colour. She kept the makeup everywhere else as minimal as possible, with a little mascara and a hint of colour on the apple of her cheeks. With her hair pulled back into a tight bun, all attention was surely diverted towards her sexy lips.

Jessica Alba

The Latina bombshell sported a satiny dark brick-red shade on her lips. Jessica showed that dark lips don’t just need to be matched with nude eyes, as she perfectly paired them with soft smokey eyes with gold accents here. She kept her cheeks slightly contoured and also highlighted the top part of her cheeks. Factor in her soft waves, gold jewelleries, dewy skin and that gorgeous, gorgeous dark gold dress, Jessica gave off the old Hollywood vibe. Absolute perfection!

Camilla Belle

At the MET Gala 2012, being the belle of the ball (pun intended), Camilla went all mysterious on her lips with a super dark, almost-black shade of brown. She made sure to keep her lips glossy to keep them un-Goth-like; a brilliant decision, as she looked absolutely breathtaking. Her dark, thick eyebrows also helped balanced out the intense lips. For an extra flair, Camilla added a highlight colour in the inner corner and under her eyes, and shaded her eyes’ crease slightly for some definition. On her cheeks, Camilla applied a warm bronzey blush.

Lana Del Ray

Is anyone else as obsessed over Lana Del Ray’s cape as I am? And those lips! The auburn beauty cleverly matched her whole dramatic outfit with glossy, tumbling waves over one shoulder, minimal eye makeup and matte dark burgundy lipstick. Lana, in that retro-gangsta style, was no doubt in her best elements at the 2012 MET Gala.

Rachel Zoe

The petite fashion guru donned one of her own custom-made creations, an off-white, off-the-shoulders tiered fringed dress. Her makeup consisted of thickly lined eyes and a very dark red lip colour. Just like Camilla Belle, Rachel made sure to add some warmth to her cheeks, right on the apple. The arresting statement necklace somehow complemented her choice of lip colour, with beads of similar hues as her lips.

Ashley Olsen

Known for her and her twin’s extraordinary style, it’s no surprise Ashley Olsen was one of the first celebrities to wear dark lipstick and pull it off. Ashley was on a similar path as Kate Bosworth’s except instead of having a colour on the apple of her cheeks, Ashley concentrated on contouring and highlighting her cheeks. She also kept her eyes bare, with the exception of some mascara. She let her dirty blond hair hang in a messy, fashionable up-do. And are those thick, groomed eyebrows enviable or what?

Agyness Deyn

The edgy supermodel matched her Marilyn Monroe-esque blond hair with a vampire-ish, deep plum lipstick. I don’t know if the combo would work on anyone else, but that’s Agyness for you! A very important thing to note: keep the rest of the face as natural as possible to make extremely dark lips work, as Agyness shows here.

Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara exploded onto the movie scene with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It’s obvious that she was ever since inspired by her character in the beauty and fashion sense. She’s kept her makeup simple but with an edge, same as her red carpet gowns. This look is typical of Rooney, but only because it suits her so well. Her vampy dark red-wine lips were perfectly matched with a little cat-eye flick at the end of her thick liner. Rooney added the tiniest amount of a peachy red blush in the contour of her cheeks. She also made sure to keep her hair slick and off her face.

Rihanna

Rihanna has a distinctive sense of style and is always ahead of everyone else. With her then-red braided hair ala Ariel of The Little Mermaid, she made the effort to match her makeup to her fiery hair. Aside from the beautiful burgundy lips, which absolutely compliment her gorgeous skin tone, she also added a hint of taupe eyeshadow on her eyes and kept the apple of her cheeks warm and glowy with sheer red blush. A couple of coats of mascara pulled the whole look together.

Just like them, you too can pull off the trend effortlessly! Keep in mind, the basics are: (1) strong, groomed brows are the best way to go, (2) softer eye makeup or barely any, and mascara is a must! (3) use a warm-toned blush in the peach, orange or red family, and (4) do not fear to go to dark side – on your lips, that is!
