C ome on, fess up! All of you have at least once experienced that moment of anger or frustration on the road when you’re either stuck in a jam, someone has rudely cut in front of your car, or when you’re unable to get out of your parking space because someone has so rudely double parked behind your car without even the decency to leave a number to contact.

Your immediate response? Get angry, shout, scold, scream or honk your horn repeatedly to let out all that frustration and anger. I’ve even seen some people giving others the middle finger while driving on the road if they are upset with the other driver!

Honking, screaming and cursing behind the wheel is an all to common thing these days, and could lead to more serious road rage cases because someone people tend to become more aggressive behind the wheel and just fly off the handle at the simplest things.

Anger and frustration behind the wheel is not a good thing, not only does it make you tense, annoyed, angry and irritable, it causes the increase in the chances of a road rage case occurring.

So how do you stay calm behind the wheel?

  • Breathe And Count To Five: Whenever you feel yourself clenching the steering wheel and getting angry or annoyed, stop a moment, take a deep breathe, count to five and remind yourself that this is not worth getting angry over. Why waste your time and energy getting angry over the thing that ticked you off? It has already happened, and you getting angry is not going to change that so why bother?

  • Be Sensible: If you’re stuck in a jam, you’re stuck in a jam. No matter how much you get angry, annoyed or irritated, it is not going to make the jam move any faster, so why do it? Be sensible, bring something to do or something to read to kill the time.

  • Play Your Favorite Song: Turn up the radio and sing along to your favorite songs. It will help you enjoy yourself a lot more and make you less prone to getting angry on the road so quickly.

  • Think Of Your Loved Ones: Every time you feel the urge to fly off the handle, think of your loved ones and how they would feel if something happened to you. That ought to help remind you why you should remain calm on the road.
