W hen I first saw the namecard of Haute Food, I thought what a classy name for a cafe and then I tasted the chocolate cookies. Yes, the cookies were definitely” haute” that was in 2010 but I did not visit the cafe. Recently, my friend SY kept going on and on about how delicious the cakes were but the only catch they close at 5pm. Now I love having tea and I usually like to arrange for tea at about 4.30 to 5pm after I finish most of my work so there was never a good time which is why it took us almost 3 months before we manage to go. And Haute Food did not disappoint. The cafe is simple enough, no fuss. But is the cakes that merits all the fuss.
Since I was very late that saturday afternoon as the skies opened up and poured with great vengeance, I only managed to have a slice of orange, basil and almond cake with pistachio nut topping with a cup of frothy latte. The cake was moist and delicious with a strange combination of flavors that oddly brought out the best in each other. I was told the tiramisu was to die for but that will have to keep for my next visit.
SY gave me a quick history how the cafe’s business really started to pick up after a write up and they used to have a lot of leftovers which they donated away. Their philosophy for closing at 5pm is because most things are expected to sell out by then and they bake fresh every day.
Business was brisk that day. The 8 tables were all fully seated with some obviously regular customers. I do however have to agree with the gentleman next table, the latte was a tad too frothy and the staff suggested he ordered the flat white next time. Well maybe I will do that too. The cake cost Rm8.50 a slice, so price is very reasonable.
