I’m not going to lie, I was very dubious about going to watch this movie. I mean, an animated show about a lizard in the desert? How good could it be? I had my doubts, especially since I am no fan of lizards, reptiles or creepy-crawlies of any kind, I certainly wasn’t keen on watching this movie (even though Johnny Depp was lending his voice talents to the show).
Rango (Johnny Depp) is a chameleon who finds himself lost in the desert. Wandering along, he comes across the Wild Wild West town of Dirt, Rango takes on the persona of the swashbuckling hero he was always wanted to be and ends up being the Sheriff of the town. But when the town encounters a crisis and Rango has to step up to the mark, just how long can he carry on pretending to be something he is not?
Watching this movie, it just goes to show that even the most unlikely looking movies can come off being hilarious and surprisingly entertaining. Hats off to director Gore Verbinski (director of Pirates of the Caribbean), because Rango was a surprising delight to watch! I may not be a fan of western, cowboy, gun-slinging type movies, but I definitely had a good laugh watching this animation.
This is not your average animation movie, because unlike all the pretty looking, pleasant characters that we are usually accustomed to with animation movies, this one focuses on the more disgusting variety of animals. Lizards, toads, chameleons, snakes, moles and so on take center stage in this movie. Despite the unlikely (and disgusting) characters, Verbinski manages to pull of some pure movie magic by turning something so unlikely into something that has become a movie that the whole family and people of any age would like to watch.
The move is categorized under the action, adventure, kids and family genre, but it would seem that adults would get a better laugh out of this movie and find it a lot more enjoyable than kids would, since they might not be able to get some of the humor at certain parts. But adults will find themselves laughing throughout the movie.
Depp has always made a name for himself by starring in the weirdest, and most unlikely roles and this time he doesn’t disappoint again as he brings the colorful, comedic chameleon Rango to life.
