I had my doubts about this movie at first and wondered whether it would be really any good, or just another flopped action-adventure movie. After the disappointment that was the Green Hornet, my expectations weren’t high but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.

John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) is Number Four who is on the run from his enemies which managed to locate him and nine others. When his guardian is killed, John sets out to find the others before his enemies can get to him. At the same time, John discovers he has some pretty remarkable powers of his own.

Believe it or not, this movie actually wasn’t too bad! I wasn’t bored 30 minutes into the movie like I was with the Green Hornet, and if a movie can keep you interested within the first 30 minutes, that’s a good indication that there is potential.

This is your typical sci-fi action adventure movie so don’t expect any deep, meaningful story behind it. What you can expect is action and a teen with superpowers. Not a movie that will have you on the edge of your seat eagerly anticipating what is next, but interesting enough for audiences to consider coming back and watching the sequel.

Kudos to the director because the movie flowed smoothly, the action sequences weren’t overdone and the superpowers element of the movie wasn’t too over the top either. The casting was good too, as Pettyfer managed to portray the moody teenager who is unhappy about being on the run well. The cast of the movie complemented each other well on screen.

Some comedic bits were included in the movie was well, but luckily, they were timed just right and didn’t fall flat or come off sounding lame and cheesy.

I have to say that despite my doubts, I ended up rather enjoying this one.

Movie Rating: 3.5 Stars
