P icture this. One hour before your friend’s birthday party and you still don’t have anything to wear. You dig deep inside your closet and all you got is your same old little black dress. The worst part is you’ve worn it a week earlier to the company’s annual dinner. So what do you think you should do now?
Fret not because with a little bit of creativity and fashion know-how you could transform that same LBD into something that looks so brand new your friend will be asking you where you got them from. It’s amazing what a little bit of layering and accessorising can elevate your LBD to a whole different level of glamour.
Here’s how to do it:
Add statement jewelry
With a plain simple dress (black or any other color), you will have more options with the choice of jewelry, just look at Selina Gomez for Glamour magazine here. You don’t have to worry about your necklace or bangle being too overpowering for the dress. You can stack and pile on the necklaces, bangles and rings of different colors and materials to make up for the simplicity of the dress. You can also stick to only one piece of jewelry, perhaps a bold and very colourful rhinestones choker or Marni-style necklace which could divert the attention from your dress. Remember you’ve worn it before. So it’s good that people are not focusing on that.
Layer it off
Jacket is a huge trend this year. Why not wear a really good tailored jacket to top off the look? Just make sure that it fits well and preferably cropped as demonstrated by Karolina Kurkova in Dior. Shrunken denim jacket in dark wash could work too but only for less formal affair, like your friend’s birthday party mentioned earlier.
Scarves
A printed scarf is great to transform your emergency standby too. Tribal and animal prints are still hot this year. Wrap them around your neck or drape them on your shoulder to achieve that boho-chic look. Mary-Kate Olsen loves her scarves and wore them even on the red-carpet. But remember! The passé trend of kaffiyeh is not even an option.
Amp up the hair and makeup
Just like what you should do with the jewelry, your hair and makeup should also be able to transform the dress that you have on. Do something dramatic with the makeup; maybe stronger eyes or ruby red lips like Alexis Bledel here for a quick chic transformation. Hair could be done in way that is different from how you’ve always wear them.
Add high heels
High-heels could spruce up any drab outfit. Not to say that your LBD is drab, but a pair of glamorous high-heels would definitely add extra height of classiness to any outfit. See how Amy Adams is wearing her LBD with a pair of animal print heels in the photo. Go with strappy heels in loud tones or ankle booties for that rockstar look. As for the heels, the higher the better. Just don’t trip at the entrance.
