So you got out of high school and into college. It’s a whole new dating scene and you think you’ve fallen in love. Now before you give it up (and by “it” I mean you’re virginity, of course) to the person you think is “The One”, give yourself a bit of a reality check. He probably isn’t! Why? 2 simple reasons:
1. Things Change
College days are just the beginning of the rest of your life. You’re probably going overseas to further your studies. With all the options given to teens these days, we have so many paths we could take. And chances are, your current boyfriend wouldn’t be going on the same path as you are. Sure, you may try your best to keep the romance alive through Skype, but it’s sad to say that most relationships don’t last the distance.
Furthermore, there are many major challenges and life changes ahead of you. Things like new environments (for example, when you enter the work force) and new friends have been known to drive a wedge between college couples. So much can happen and whether you like it or not, circumstances do affect relationships.
2. People Change
People are fickle minded. College boys are especially fickle minded! I knew a guy who was so in love with a girl and then, a couple of weeks after things ended, started dating one of her close friends! Yes, total violation of the girl code. But that’s a story for another day.
Point is, people change and so do feelings. So if your guy has a history of quick switches (like the poor fool above who took her friend’s discard) you may want to put off making your decision.
Now don’t get me wrong, I certainly am no purity-ring-wearing, no-sex-before-marriage kind of person. However, I do believe that losing your virginity is a life changing decision. You should never do it when you’re not ready and definitely not because you think you’re “going to be together forever anyway”. Because as I said before, things change, people change, feelings change. So take this into consideration and never let the future in your imagination affect a decision you make right here, right now.
