H onestly, this is probably the one movie that probably wouldn’t have cost some over-the-top budget to make. One location for the entire movie, one main actor in focus. And that’s it. Of course we can hear the voices of the other actors throughout the movie, but really the main focus is Ryan Reynolds.
Buried centers around Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds), a truck driver who wakes up in a coffin buried six feet underground with no memory of how he got there or why. Then begins the 90 minute struggle for survival as he tries everything to get help and get out of the hellish nightmare he is in. Conroy is only buried with a cell phone and a lighter. The cell phone is his only contact with the outside world and frustratingly enough no one he can come into contact with is very helpful. It is a race against time as he rights for his life and fights to survive.
Honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about this movie. It’s something different, I must say. Who would have thought that they could make a movie from an insider’s perspective of what it would be like to be trapped in a coffin? But considering how limited this movie is in terms of location, it is pretty impressive that they managed to make an entire movie focused on just the inside of a coffin. And for 90 minutes no less.
It’s a different kind of movie, and some people might like it, some might not. But hats off to Ryan Reynolds though, he certainly played his part well and was very believable as the frantic victim fighting for survival.
I would give it a two and a half star rating, simply because I’m not quite sure how to feel about this show.
