I t is common knowledge that using a facial mask once a week is great for our skin. But with about a million different options, how on earth would we know which to use? Well believe it or not, using the wrong face mask may actually worsen your skin condition. Read on to learn more about the different types of face masks and which suits your skin type best.

1. Clay and Mud Mask

The first type of mask is the clay and mud mask. These can be identified by their earthy colors and thick texture. Clay and mud masks are great for those with oily skin as it absorbs oil. The mask hardens quickly and is often very effective in cleansing the pores and removing blackheads. Avoid using this type of mask if you have dry skin as it is very damaging!

2. Firming Mask

This type of mask usually comes in a gel or cream form and is supposed to tighten your skin. Collagen is usually involved, or, in some more luxurious masks, caviar is added to improve skin elasticity. These masks usually leave your skin feeling smoother and reduces the appearance of fine lines. Avoid wasting your time with this if you’re a teenager without any wrinkle problems!

3. Hydrating Mask

As the name suggests, this mask’s main purpose is to provide moisture to the skin. There is a wide range of ingredients used in hydrating masks from essential oils to fruit essences. These ingredients provide dry skin with natural oils, leaving skin feeling fresh and soft. Avoid hydrating masks if you have oily skin!

4. Repairing/ Revitalizing Mask

This last type of mask is targeted towards those with damaged skin. How do you know if you have damaged skin? Check to see if your skin looks old and papery, has pigmentations, freckles, acne scars or any signs of sun damage. Repairing and revitalizing masks have ingredients such as vitamin C that stimulate your skin cells to renew themselves. They leave your skin looking much brighter, and, in the long run, reduce marks from sun and other skin damages. Avoid using these masks if you haven’t got any of these problems as the stimulating ingredients may actually damage your skin!
