I f you’re into snug clothing, then you might just love this new spray-on technology-where you don’t have to go out to the mall and but ready-made clothes. Using aerosol technology, a liquid mixture developed by Imperial College London and a company called Fabrican lets you spray clothes…directly onto your body! And believe it or not, after the spray dries, it creates a thin layer of fabric that can be peeled off, washed and reworn!

“When I first began this project I really wanted to make a futuristic, seamless, quick and comfortable material,” says Manel Torres, a Spanish fashion designer and academic visitor at Imperial College in a statement. Torres worked with Paul Luckham, a professor of particle technology at the Imperial College to create the material.

“In my quest to produce this kind of fabric, I ended up returning to the principles of the earliest textiles such as felt, which were also produced by taking fibers and finding a way of binding them together without having to weave or stitch them,” says Torres.

According to Reuters, “Couture these days is almost dying,” Torres said. “I think here we have a good way of creating instant clothing — that is not very expensive.” Torres demonstrated the process in a lab at Imperial College, spraying a T-shirt onto a model in a matter of minutes. An experience the unnamed model described as “nice, actually.” “It’s like second skin,” she said.

“The beauty about this material is that…I will tear it into parts and I will dissolve it again with the same solvent and I will spray some of it in Rome in two days time,” Torres said. Luckham says the technology could see a change to the way we think about using fabric — for example a sterile duster could be sprayed onto a surface which needs to be cleaned. “The advantage of having it in an aerosol can is that once the material is inside nothing can get in and so no germs can get inside,” he said.

Okay, so we told you that these spray-on clothes can be ‘peeled off, washed and reworn’ but Torres says more work is needed to ensure it can withstand a washing machine…Let’s wait and see what comes out of it. But so far, we think this is a pretty darn cool idea!

Wow! Who would have thought! Might take some getting use to though, spraying on your clothes :)

ya know…wonders of technology will never cease, I guess this is taking packing for traveling light to a whole new level. I wonder if they can make something for skirts… so then all we pack are aerosol cans in different colours… only thing to contend with is airport regulations about boarding with aerosol cans…
