The necks big statement

A couple of seasons ago, shoulder-duster earrings were the best accessory to be seen in. From chandelier styles to dangling teardrops, there wasn’t a pierced ear that didn’t showcase these eye-catching pieces of jewellery. This fall however, the erogenous zone has moved to the neck. Designers sent their models down the runway in tops with gently folded funnel necks, necklines had unusual architectural folds and crystals as well as beads adorned necks in the form of draping, bib-sized necklaces and chunky chokers. Here are some examples of necklaces that are hot at the moment and a few ways to wear them.

Burberry’s navy blue, multi-stone necklace on a pewter chain is an example of a necklace that can be worn for a formal event or out at night to a party. The gems immediately provide an evening, dressed-up feel, so any outfit you match it with will be dressed up immediately. In order to ensure all eyes are drawn to the necklace, it is best that your top is simple. Your best bet would be a shift dress with a boat neck or scoop neckline with a structured line. A simple top like a clean T-shirt paired with a printed pencil skirt would also be a great pairing as the top would provide a plain background for the necklace while the printed skirt adds a touch of interest to the outfit.

A draping necklace like Christian Lacroix’s antique gold long plated necklace with floral details has an ideal Egyptian-like quality that would look beautiful set against a sheer white blouse and slim-cut pants. The flowing strands of the necklace will elongate the upper-half of the body and if you dare, a great outfit for the night would be this golden necklace paired with a military-style vest open at the neck, a short skirt and booties.

Girlie-girls will love this enamel flower necklace with Swarovski crystal and pearl details edged with gold. Subtle enough to be worn for day, this brings a touch of a garden to any outfit. Match this Kenneth Jay Lane piece with your work attire as it will look great with a collared shirt and striped pants, matched with a pair of plum-hued or even yellow pumps. The colour of the shoes will bring out the colour of the necklace, pulling the outfit together.

If buying a single, expensive designer piece is too hard on the wallet, fear not for there are some DIY options to this. Like on the Gucci runway, you can simply layer 3 or 4 necklaces of different length to sit on the breastbone and create a cascading effect. Marni also has a different way of creating a statement necklace. Using faux flowers, you can thread a few together at an angle (so it doesn’t come across as a garland) on a piece of leather string.
