Depends on which era of “retro” your party is, you can dress according to that era!:) 50′s, 60′s 70′s 80′s all have distinct features from their time :D But, so far, I’ve seen a few retro parties’ pictures, they all seem to be liking the flower power era with big hair and headbands, huge glasses, the works! Let’s go back into time to check out options of what you can wear!

The most “famous” and over the top retro clothing was from the Disco Era. Maybe because it was also the era where people partied a lot! Think Foxxy Cleopatra from Austin Powers!

Colours should be very very popping like pinks, greens, orange, etc. Don’t forget headbands were a big thing then! Also BIG HAIR and boots. SEQUINS and anything shiny will do also!:)

Short dresses like these with flared sleeves are very retro. Paired with a headband and boots, you will look like a disco diva!

OR you can opt for a bell bottom pants with platform shoes and a halter top. Just be bold with prints on the costume!

Or you can go for the awesome Jacqie Kennedy style, but it would be too boring for a party lah!

How about the hippie era? Love and Peace to all!:)

Tie-dyed dresses, t shirts with brown/colourful bell bottomed pants with a headband and earth friendly, flower power clothes! Bring out the “Peace” sign, huge jewelry and colourful sunnies and you’re all set! Buy a long haired wig and sunnies, paint your face with flowers and make a big cut out flower! :D

Here’s an example!

Owh, don’t forget to watch “Saturday Night Fever”! Then you can like, learn some awesome dance moves to party on at the Retro Party!

Normal Retro Dresses:

Try going to any shops that you usually shop and try to match the dresses from way back then(This website has many options of “modern” hippie clothes). Think flowers, colours, headbands, sequins, etc. As for being plus sized, why not try Maxi Dresses? It is from the 70′s and quite retro!

Any other suggestions from anyone else?

think ‘Grease’ girl~~ (it’s one of my fav musical show btw)

    The 1950′s stereotype and style.
    1. The cashmere sweater.
    2. Poodle skirt.
    3. Rolled up t-shirt sleeve (black or white t-shirt good).
    4. Pedal pushers (gold is good).
    5. Black leather jacket–the collar must be turned up to be “hep.”
    6. The scarf.
    7. 1950′s gym wear.

    Got it from http://home.att.net/~boomers.fifties.teenmag/1950s_fashion.html

As karenmarie said, accessories play really big role in this~ Scarf, ribbon(pony tail is so cute~), hairband, big earrings, etc.etc.

    Oh and.. patterns~~ Big Polka dots~ ^_^

    I also want a ‘retro’ theme party… >.<
Karenmarie, Yetmee… let’s have a party among us blogshop owners~~ LOL

    hey Rossy…

How about mix and matching your costume, like going for the hippie style. Just get a long maxi dress with FLOWERS from any stores.
OR, a brown leather skirt with a chiffon printed blouse with puffy sleeves?

Hippie headband and accessories from the costume stores and accessorize yourself. . . Follow the Hippies era’s pictures :D

karenmarie.. can I suggest the plus-sized shop on MOFSD?

like http://curvychics.blogspot.com. They do have a piece of sequins dress..

I do think that their Disco Diva, Moulin Rouge and their Retro Diva (March entry) are quite of retro style too.. Match with hairband and bangles, plus earrings..

    Hey girls,

If you need references for retro, look into the movies.
Dreamgirls or Hairspray would be pretty good, actually, and they have references for bigger girls, too (Jennifer Hudson, Nikki Blonsky).

But the key is to make the best out of your assets, not trying to fit into something you’re not. Take into consideration your body type and your likes and dislikes, and work something out from there! =)

The other alternative is to get something made for you. It’s easy nowadays with the waist clinchers, that can make any mu-mu look flattering, so you can go hippie with a touch of style.

Top up with Accessories if you like, headbands, glasses, the like. All available on blogshops locally. Just browse through Emmagem!

I’d love to help anyone in need, email me if you like, and I could perhaps give you some references.

OFTLO is a vintage store, though. You can always browse through us and see if you can find anything to suit your needs. =)

    Hope that helped!
